HEALeR Symposium returns November 6 to explore ethical implementation in learning health systems

On November 6, 2025, the Health Excellence Achieved through Learning health systems Research (HEALeR) Collaborative will host its 2nd Biennial Symposium, Evidence in Action: Advancing Ethical Implementation Science in Learning Health Systems, at the NCAA Hall of Champions and Conference Center in downtown Indianapolis.
The symposium is free to attend and welcomes those working to embed research into practice across clinical, administrative, or policy settings. It is hosted in partnership with IU School of Medicine, IU Health, the Indiana CTSI, the Regenstrief Institute, and the Irsay Institute.
This one-day, in-person event brings together researchers, clinicians, trainees, and health system leaders to explore how learning health systems (LHS) can drive meaningful, evidence-based change. Sessions will focus on scaling what works, using real-world data for decision-making, navigating ethical tensions in care delivery, and building sustainable infrastructure for continuous learning.
Keynote speakers include Dr. Lisa Cooper, Bloomberg Distinguished Professor at Johns Hopkins University, and Dr. Ruth Faden, founding director of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics. They will be joined by national and Indiana-based experts in implementation science, health system design, and applied research.
“This is a space to talk about how learning health systems are built—what’s working, what isn’t, and how we can use research to improve care in ways that are ethical, inclusive, and grounded in the realities of practice,” said Dr. Erika R. Cheng, Executive Director of HEALeR and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at IU School of Medicine.
